Empowered.
Together.
Forever.
“Imagine if you could tangibly help a mama feed her children or assist a family with securing emergency accommodation. Imagine the smile on their faces as they realise that someone has chosen to say…I see you, you’ve got this, and we’re in this together.”
Transforming Challenges to Opportunities
The crisis in Palestine and Sudan has led to a significant influx of refugees into Egypt, with an estimated 2,200 Palestinians and 450,000 Sudanese seeking refuge since armed conflicts erupted in their homelands in 2023. This has contributed to a total of 9 million migrants living in Egypt today. Despite offering a sanctuary for many, the journey of integration presents substantial challenges, particularly in securing employment, economic stability, and social inclusion.
These families were placed in a position where they had lost their homes, loved ones and all of their possessions; being forced to flee from their homelands and begin a new life from scratch.
Understanding the Landscape
Palestinian and Sudanese refugees equipped with valuable skills, education and work experience, have the potential to contribute significantly to the local economy. However, they face considerable barriers:
Limited Employment Opportunities: Regulations and hiring policies severely restrict refugees' access to the labour market, compounded by discrimination and vulnerability to exploitation.
Economic Vulnerability: Many refugees live in poverty, exacerbated by Egypt’s challenging economic situation, characterised by price increases, high inflation, and political instability.
Break the cycle of poverty
In Egypt, refugees are among the most vulnerable of the urban poor. They have limited livelihood opportunities, and many struggle to make ends meet. Refugees live in an urban setting with access to markets and services, as do members of the local communities.
The first thing our partners do is start with food distributions and cash assistance to help cover most immediate needs such as rent, food, clothing and health expenses. This is the first step to helping women and their families flourish and thrive.
Food distributions and cash-based interventions assist in providing protection, assistance and services to the most vulnerable. Cash and vouchers help the displaced meet a variety of needs that allow them to build and support livelihoods, and to facilitate voluntary repatriation.
By securing these fundamental aspects of daily life, we pave the way for stability and create a foundation upon which sustainable growth can be built.
